As a part of BIISS Country Lecture Series (CLS), BIISS organised its 14th Lecture on “Bangladesh-EU Relations: A Multifaceted Partnership” at BIISS Auditorium on 06 October 2016. H.E. Ambassador Pierre Mayaudon, Head of the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Bangladesh was the Guest Speaker on the event. Major General A K M Abdur Rahman, ndc, psc, Director General, BIISS delivered the address of welcome while Ambassador Munshi Faiz Ahmad, Chairman, Board of Governors, BIISS wrapped up the session. Officials from different ministries of Bangladesh government, representatives from different international organisations, members of diplomatic corps, academicians, journalists from print and electronic media participated in the open discussion and gave their valuable opinions, observations, questions and suggestions on how Bangladesh and EU can consolidate their existing ties of friendship and cooperation in the coming years.

 

BIISS organised a consultation on ‘Migrants in Crisis Situation’ in collaboration with Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh and International Organisation for Migration (IOM) on Tuesday, 04 October 2016 at BIISS Auditorium. Mr. Mohammed Abdiker, Director, Dept. of Operations & Emergency, IOM made the keynote address in the seminar. The designated discussants were Dr. Saleemul Huq, Director, International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD); and Ms. Farah Kabir, Country Director, Action Aid Bangladesh. Mr. Md. Shahidul Haque, Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh wrapped the session up by his valuable remarks. Ambassador Munshi Faiz Ahmad, Chairman, Board of Governors of BIISS chaired the consultation.

 

 

 

Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organised a seminar on “Implementing SDGs in Bangladesh: Challenges and Policy Options” on 24 August 2016 at BIISS Auditorium. Mr Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, MP, Honourable Foreign Minister, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was the Chief Guest at the Seminar. The seminar was divided into three sessions including two working sessions. Ambassador Munshi Faiz Ahmad, Chairman, Board of Governors, BIISS, chaired the inaugural and second working session. The first working session was moderated by Dr KAS Murshid, DG, BIDS. Scholars, academicians, policy makers, former and current government officials were present in the seminar.

 

 

Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organised a Seminar on “Recent Extremist Violence in Bangladesh: Response Option” on Thursday, 28 July 2016 at BIISS Auditorium. Mr. Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, MP, Honourable Foreign Minister, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh graced the Inaugural Session as the Chief Guest and Mr. H T Imam, Political Affairs Adviser to the Honourable Prime Minister, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was the Chief Guest of the Closing Session. The Seminar was divided into four sessions including Inaugural and Closing sessions. Ambassador Munshi Faiz Ahmad, Chairman, Board of Governors, BIISS with introductory remarks chaired the Inaugural Session. The second session was chaired by Ambassador Muhammad Zamir, Former Chief Information Commissioner, Bangladesh. Brig Gen M Shakhawat Hussain ndc psc (Retd), Former Election Commissioner of Bangladesh was the chair of the third session. Mr. Md. Shahidul Haque, Foreign Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Bangladesh chaired the closing session. Nine presentations were made by academics and high officials during these sessions of the Seminar. High-level military officials, scholars, academia, policy-makers, former and current government officials and members of diplomatic corps as well as representatives from development partner organisations participated in the open discussion sessions. They highlighted and deliberated on various aspects of recent violent extremism happening in and beyond Bangladesh.

Armed Forces Division (AFD), Bangladesh and Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) jointly organised a Seminar on“Civil-Military Relations in Democracy: An Effective Framework” on Wednesday, 20 July 2016 at BIISS Auditorium. Major General Tarique Ahmed Siddiqui, rcds, psc (retd), Security Affairs Adviser to the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Government of Bangladesh graced the Inaugural Session as the Chief Guest and Professor Dr Gowher Rizvi, Hon’ble Prime Minister’s Adviser for International Affairs, Government of Bangladesh was the Chief Guest of the Closing Session. The Seminar was divided into three sessions including Inaugural and Closing sessions. Ambassador Munshi Faiz Ahmad, Chairman, Board of Governors, BIISS chaired the Inaugural Session. The second session was chaired by Major General Muhammed Firdaus Mian, psc (Retd). Professor Dr. Imtiaz Ahmed, Department of International Relations, University of Dhaka was the chair of Closing Session. Eight presentations were made by academics and high officials from both military and civil administration during three sessions of the Seminar. Chief of Army Staff General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq, ndc, psc, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Mohammed Nizamuddin Ahmed, osp, ndc, psc, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Abu Esrar, BBP, ndc, acsc, high-level military officials, scholars, academia, policy makers, former and current government officials and members of diplomatic corps as well as representatives from development partner organisations and media participated in the open discussion sessions. They highlighted and deliberated on various aspects of civil-military relations in democracy.

 

Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organised a National Consultation titled“Preventing Violent Extremism through Community Engagement”on 19 April 2016 at the BIISS auditorium. H. E. Mr. Md. Shahriar Alam, MP, Hon’ble State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Government of Bangladesh inaugurated the session and delivered Opening Remarks. Ambassador M. Humayun Kabir was the keynote speaker. Major General A K M Abdur Rahman, ndc, psc, Director General, BIISS delivered the address of welcome. Ambassador Munshi Faiz Ahmad, Chairman, Board of Governors, BIISS wrapped up the session with his concluding remarks.

Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) with the support of South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE) organised a seminar on“Natural Resources, National Income and Planning in Bangladesh” on 16 March 2016 at the BIISS Auditorium. Mr. Muhammad Abdul Mannan, MP, Honourable State Minister, Ministry of Planning and Finance, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was the Chief Guest at the Seminar. Major General A K M Abdur Rahman, ndc, psc, Director General, BIISS chaired the seminar. Dr. Mahfuz Kabir, Senior Research Fellow, BIISS presented the keynote paper at the seminar on ‘Valuation of Selected Subsoil Minerals in Bangladesh: Application of SEEA’. Scholars, academicians, policy makers, former and current government officials were present in the seminar and participated actively in the open discussion.

 

Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Bangladesh and Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) jointly organised a Seminar on“Bangladesh’s Relations with Latin American Countries: Unlocking Potentials”. The Seminar took place at the BIISS Auditorium on 06 March 2016. Mr. Md. Shahriar Alam, MP, Honourable State Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Bangladesh graced the Seminar as the Chief Guest. The Seminar was divided into five sessions including four working sessions. Ambassadors of various Latin American Countries to Bangladesh e.g., Brazil, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, Ecuador, and Peru made presentations during the working sessions. Scholars, members of academia, policy makers, former and current government officials, and members of diplomatic corps as well as representatives from development partner organisations participated in the open discussion sessions. They highlighted and deliberated on various aspects of relations between Bangladesh and Latin American countries.

   

To celebrate four decades of Bangladesh-China relationship, Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organised a day-long Seminar titled“Bangladesh-China Relations: 40 Years of Partnership” on Tuesday, 26 January 2016, at BIISS Auditorium. A five-member delegation from China comprised of former ambassadors of China to Bangladesh attended and deliberated in the Seminar. Mr. Md. Shahriar Alam, MP, Hon’ble State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh graced the inaugural session as the Chief Guest. Ambassador Wang Chungui, Former Ambassador of China to Bangladesh and Head of Chinese Delegation delivered the opening remarks. Ambassador Farooq Sobhan, President, Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) and Former Ambassador of Bangladesh to China and H. E. Ma Mingqiang, Ambassador of China to Bangladesh also made opening remarks during the inaugural session. Major General A K M Abdur Rahman, ndc, psc, Director General, BIISS, delivered the address of welcome. Ambassador Munshi Faiz Ahmad, Chairman, Board of Governors, BIISS, chaired the inaugural session. Mr. Md. Shahidul Haque, Foreign Secretary, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was present as the Chief Guest in the concluding session of the Seminar. Ambassador Hu Qianwen, Former Ambassador of China to Bangladesh and Ambassador A K M Farooq, Former Ambassador of Bangladesh to China, made closing remarks in the concluding session. Ambassador Munshi Faiz Ahmad, Chairman, Board of Governors, BIISS, wrapped the session up as session chair.

The seminar on “Migration and Development: Challenges and Perspectives” was organised jointly by Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on Thursday, 21 January 2016 at BIISS Auditorium. Sir Peter Sutherland, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General (SRSG) on Migration and Development made the keynote presentation. The designated discussants were Eva Akerman Borje, Seventh GFMD Chair, Sweden; and Mr John Bingham, ICMC, Global Civil Society Coordinator. Mr Md. Shahidul Haque, Foreign Secretary, Government of Bangladesh started the seminar with opening remarks and introduction of the speaker. Ambassador Munshi Faiz Ahmad, Chairman, Board of Governors of BIISS made the concluding remarks.
