ABSTRACT

The paper analyses the current trends of Bangladesh-India maritime cooperation in three aspects: maritime connectivity, blue economy and maritime security. The paper argues that there has been an increasing focus on maritime cooperation between these two neighbouring countries since 2015. However, extensive focus on connectivity, one-way maritime trade, lack of infrastructure, environmental concern, dearth of urge for on-ground implementation and dispute over continental shelf are some of the key challenges for effective maritime cooperation. Taking into account those hurdles, the analysis provides some useful suggestions to strengthen ties in this area. The paper suggests to ensure the overall benefits of both sides, some key areas need to be focused on with utmost importance that include: increased blue economy cooperation; ensuring environmental sustainability; conducting joint marine scientific research; resolving the grey areas in the Bay of Bengal; and increasing maritime diplomacy.
