Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organised a Roundtable titled “Bangladesh in the Nuclear Age: Policies, Challenges and Prospects”, on Monday, 14 July 2025 at the BIISS auditorium. Professor Dr M Tamim, Vice Chancellor, Independent University, Bangladesh, graced the event as the Guest of Honour. Ambassador A F M Gousal Azam Sarkar, Chairman of BIISS, chaired the program while Professor Dr Ijaj Hossein, former Dean of Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), moderated the discussion. The event began with a welcome address from the Director General of BIISS, Major General Iftekhar Anis, BSP, awc, afwc, psc, PEng.

 

To set the tone of the discussion, Ms Lam-ya Mostaque, Research Fellow, BIISS delivered a comprehensive presentation, titled “Nuclear Energy in Bangladesh: Prospects and Challenges”. Afterwards, a Panel discussion took place where Dr Md Shafiqul Islam, Professor, Department of Nuclear Engineering, Dhaka University; Mr Mahmud Hossain, Director and Chief Engineer, Nuclear Power and Energy Division (NPED), Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission; Brigadier General Akhtar Shahid, SUP (BAR), ndc, psc, G+, MPhill and Dr Md Zahedul Hassan, Managing Director, Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL) shared their valuable insights and suggestions. Thereafter, an open discussion ensued on the subject matter. Followed by the open discussion, Professor Dr Ijaj Hossein summed up the discussion. Thereafter, the Guest of Honour of the event delivered his insightful remarks on the topic. Finally, the Chair of the program delivered his concluding remarks.

 

Senior officials from relevant ministries, former diplomats, senior military officials, researchers, and academics, as well as representatives from different think tanks and national organisations, attended the Roundtable and enriched the discussion with their valuable opinions, comments, suggestions, and observations during the open discussion session.
