Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organised a Roundtable Discussion on “Geopolitics of Water: Bangladesh Perspective” on Wednesday, 29 January 2025 at theBIISS auditorium. Brigadier General (Retd) Dr M Sakhawat, Honourable Advisor, Ministry of Shipping, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Professor Emeritus Dr Ainun Nishat, Adviser at the Center for Climate Change and Environmental Research (C3R), BRAC University also graced the occasion as Special Guest. Major General Iftekhar Anis, BSP, awc, afwc, psc, PEng, Director General of BIISS, delivered the welcome address and chaired the session. Three presentations were made in the Roundtable Discussion. The Keynote Speech on “Hydropolitics in South Asia: Quest for Sustainable Transboundary Water Sharing” was delivered by Dr Sufia Khanom, Senior Research Fellow, BIISS. Professor Dr Mashfiqus Salehin, Institute of Water and Flood Management, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) spoke on “Transboundary Water Sharing: New Mechanisms for New Challenges” and Dr Mohammad Abul Hossen, Member, Joint Rivers Commission (JRC), Bangladesh presented “Water Negotitions: Challenges and Options for Bangladesh”. There was an Open Discussion session followed the presentations. Senior officials from different ministries and departments, academia, researchers, and faculties from various universities participated in the discussion. They enriched it by presenting their valuable questions, comments, suggestions, and observations during the open discussion session.
