Abstract

This short research note examines informatization trends in SAARC countries during the late 1990s. It highlights how ICT developments were beginning to reshape governance, communication, and economic activity. The study notes the uneven progress across South Asia and calls for regional cooperation in ICT policy.

The note briefly surveys national ICT initiatives in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. Section One highlights emerging e-governance projects. Section Two discusses private sector contributions, particularly in IT services. Section Three emphasizes digital divides, including rural-urban disparities and affordability issues. The conclusion calls for a SAARC-wide ICT strategy to promote regional informatization and bridge digital gaps.
