Biography

Major General A S M Ridwanur Rahman, awc, afwc, psc, G took over as the Director General of Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) on 01 December 2025.

 

Major General Ridwan was commissioned in the Regiment of Artillery on 21 December 1990 from the Bangladesh Military Academy. He commanded an artillery regiment, two artillery brigades and an infantry division. He served twice under the blue helmet: as a contingent member in UNIKOM (Kuwait) and as a staff officer in MONUSCO (DR Congo).

 

His distinguished military career includes staff assignments in two infantry brigades,  and at key directorates of the Army Headquarters, namely Overseas Operations, Military Operations and Military Training Directorate. He also served as a distinguished instructor at the Bangladesh Military Academy, the School of Infantry & Tactics, and the National Defence College (AFWC Wing). While serving as Director Military Training, he performed as the Focal Point of Bangladesh Army for all bilateral and multilateral defence cooperation/engagement.

 

In his present rank, Major General Ridwan served as the Commandant of Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operations Training (BIPSOT) and Director General of National Telecommunication Monitoring Center (NTMC). As Commandant BIPSOT, he served as the President of Association of Asia-Pacific Peacekeeping Training Center (AAPTC) and also as the President of International Association of Peacekeeping Training Center (IAPTC).

 

Major General Ridwan is a graduate of Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC), Mirpur and UK Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC). He is also a graduate of the prestigious US Army War College. Besides his two master’s degrees at home, the General has also obtained a Master's in Defence Studies from King’s College, London and a Master's in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College.

 

The General is a widely travelled person and visited different countries of Asia, Europe, Africa and America. In personal life, Major General Ridwan is happily married and blessed with two daughters and a grand daughter.
