The first decade of Bangladeshs independence represented a period of extraordinary challenges and significant achievements, with this article providing a comprehensive assessment of development progress from 1971 to 1982. The research begins by examining the promises and aspirations articulated during the liberation struggle, analyzing how these informed early development planning and policy formulation. The analysis explores economic development achievements, assessing progress in agricultural production particularly the food grain revolution, industrial development including the growth of ready-made garments and other manufacturing sectors, and infrastructure development in transportation, energy, and communications. The article examines social development outcomes, analyzing improvements in literacy rates, educational access, healthcare services, and basic needs provision. The study investigates political institution-building, assessing the evolution of constitutional frameworks, party systems, local government institutions, and civil-military relations. The research evaluates international relations achievements, examining how Bangladesh established its diplomatic presence, navigated Cold War politics, and developed economic partnerships with various countries and international organizations. Based on the comprehensive assessment, the article identifies significant achievements including surprising resilience in food production, successful diplomatic engagement, and social mobilization despite enormous challenges. The analysis also examines persistent challenges including poverty, population growth, environmental vulnerabilities, and governance limitations. The findings provide valuable insights into the complex process of nation-building in extremely challenging circumstances and contribute to understanding how new states establish themselves in the international system while addressing overwhelming development needs.
