In-house Seminar: "Climate Diplomacy of Bangladesh:Lessons from COP 27 and Way Forward"

This in-house seminar provides a critical review of Bangladesh's climate diplomacy, with a particular focus on the outcomes of the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP 27) and the strategic way forward for the nation. As a country on the frontlines of the climate crisis, Bangladesh has long been a prominent and influential voice in global climate negotiations. This session will assess the successes and shortcomings of its diplomatic efforts at COP 27, held in Sharm el-Sheikh. A central point of discussion will be the historic agreement to establish a "Loss and Damage" fund for vulnerable countries. The seminar will analyze the role Bangladesh played, both as a national entity and as a leader within climate-vulnerable forums, in achieving this breakthrough.

Looking forward, the seminar will map out the future challenges and opportunities for Bangladesh's climate diplomacy. It will address the crucial next steps in operationalizing the Loss and Damage fund, including the battles ahead over its funding, governance, and accessibility. The discussion will also cover other key negotiating tracks, such as raising ambition for emissions cuts (mitigation), scaling up finance for adaptation, and ensuring technology transfer. Panelists will explore how Bangladesh can strengthen its negotiating capacity, build and leverage strategic alliances, and effectively use scientific data and real-world evidence of climate impacts to bolster its arguments. The ultimate objective is to refine and enhance Bangladesh's climate diplomacy strategy, ensuring it remains a powerful and effective advocate for climate justice and secures the international support necessary to build a resilient and prosperous future in the face of escalating climate threats.
