In-house Seminar: The First Global Stocktake on Climate Change: Issues and Challenges
This seminar unpacks the outcomes of the first Global Stocktake (GST) under the Paris Agreement and analyzes what they mean for Bangladesh’s climate policy, finance strategy, and sectoral transitions. Presenters review progress and gaps in mitigation, adaptation, and means of implementation, placing particular emphasis on just energy transitions, methane management, and nature-based solutions. The discussion assesses implications for nationally determined contributions, long-term strategies, and investment pipelines that align with temperature goals and resilience. A finance segment explores concessional windows, debt-for-climate swaps, and project preparation facilities that can unlock bankable programs in renewables, efficiency, resilient agriculture, and urban cooling. The session highlights adaptation priorities—salinity intrusion, riverbank erosion, coastal protection, heat stress—and the need for climate information services that guide local decisions. Participants also consider measurement, reporting, and verification systems to meet transparency standards and attract private capital. The seminar concludes with a pathway to operationalize GST findings in Bangladesh: governance upgrades, cross-ministerial coordination, and stakeholder engagement that converts high-level guidance into implementable, monitorable actions delivering co-benefits for health, jobs, and ecosystems.
