In-house Seminar: The Role of Social Media in Bangladesh’s Public Diplomacy

This in-house seminar critically examines the evolving role of social media as a pivotal instrument in Bangladesh’s public diplomacy efforts. In an era of digital interconnectedness, platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn have become significant arenas for nation branding, foreign policy communication, and citizen engagement. The discussion will navigate the opportunities and challenges presented by this new media landscape. Key focus areas include the strategic use of social media by government agencies and diplomatic missions to project a positive national image, articulate foreign policy stances, and engage with diasporas and global audiences. The seminar will explore case studies of successful digital diplomacy campaigns and analyze how Bangladesh can enhance its outreach on critical issues such as the Rohingya crisis, climate change vulnerability, and economic development narratives.

Furthermore, the session will address the inherent risks, including the rapid spread of misinformation and disinformation that can undermine diplomatic efforts and tarnish the national image. It will delve into strategies for effective digital crisis communication and the importance of building a resilient information ecosystem. Panelists will also discuss the necessity of capacity building within the foreign service to equip diplomats with the necessary skills for digital engagement, data analytics, and content creation. The dialogue aims to foster a deeper understanding of how to integrate social media into a cohesive public diplomacy strategy, ensuring that Bangladesh’s voice is heard authoritatively and authentically on the global stage, thereby strengthening its soft power and advancing its national interests in the 21st century.
