Seminar on “July Uprising: Understanding the Expectations and Realities”
The Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organized a seminar titled “July Uprising: Understanding the Expectations and Realities” on 21 August 2025 at the BIISS Auditorium, Dhaka.
The seminar brought together researchers, young scholars, and policy enthusiasts to reflect on the significance of the July Uprising and examine the gap between public expectations and the realities that emerged in its aftermath. Through keynote presentations, panel discussions, and interactive deliberations, participants explored the political, social, and governance-related dimensions of the movement and its broader implications for Bangladesh’s democratic and developmental trajectory.
The programme featured a keynote presentation by Md. Abu Bakar Sakib, Intern, BIISS, followed by a panel discussion involving Sanjid Tahsin Rakin, Fariha Tabassum Ema, and Marzia Hossain Jamila. The discussion was further enriched by deliberations from Jonaed Khan, Rafia Islam, and Ferdousi Zaman. The seminar was chaired by Reshma Sultana Muskaan, Intern, BIISS. Major General Iftekhar Anis, BSP, awc, afwc, psc, PEng, Director General, BIISS, attended the programme as the Chief Guest and delivered the concluding address.
Participants examined the aspirations, demands, and expectations associated with the July Uprising and assessed the extent to which those expectations have been realized. Discussions focused on issues of governance, political participation, social justice, institutional reform, and citizen engagement. The seminar also explored lessons learned from the movement and their relevance for strengthening democratic practices, accountability, and inclusive development.
The event provided a valuable platform for critical reflection and dialogue, encouraging young researchers and participants to engage with contemporary political and social issues through informed discussion and evidence-based analysis.
Objectives of the Seminar are:
• To examine the historical significance and contemporary relevance of the July Uprising.
• To explore the expectations, aspirations, and demands that emerged from the movement.
• To assess the realities and outcomes of the uprising from political, social, and governance perspectives.
• To identify lessons learned and their implications for democratic development and institutional reform.
• To encourage critical dialogue and research on issues of citizen participation, accountability, and social change.
• To provide a platform for young scholars and researchers to contribute to discussions on Bangladesh’s evolving political and social landscape.
