Organized by: Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic
Studies (BIISS)
Format: Monthly Research Meet
The Bangladesh Institute of
International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) successfully hosted
its latest Monthly Research Meet (MRM) on “The
Race for the Arctic Dominance: The Case of Greenland” delivered by Md Jahan Shoieb, Research Fellow at BIISS. The
session, held at the BIISS auditorium in Dhaka, brought together scholars,
policy practitioners, and students to engage in a timely discussion on emerging
geopolitical dynamics in the Arctic region.
In his
insightful presentation, Mr. Shoieb unpacked the rapidly evolving strategic
competition in the Arctic — a region undergoing dramatic environmental change
with significant implications for global security, economic interests, and
international diplomacy. The focus of the talk was Greenland, a strategically
positioned Arctic territory whose geopolitical importance has surged amid
intensifying great-power rivalry.
Drawing on empirical research and contemporary policy trends, Mr.
Shoieb highlighted key themes including:
v The strategic
resurgence of Arctic geopolitics amid climate-induced ice melt and the opening
of new maritime routes.
v Greenland’s
increasing significance as a pivot point for global power projection and
resource access.
v The roles of
major actors including the United States, Russia, China, and European states in
shaping Arctic governance.
v Implications
for South Asian policy frameworks and Bangladesh’s engagement in broader global
strategic discourses.
Participants engaged in a robust Q&A session following the
presentation, exploring how Arctic geopolitics intersects with global economic
governance, environmental policy, and regional security architectures.
The Monthly Research Meet series at BIISS is designed to foster
academic dialogue and enhance understanding of pressing international issues
impacting Bangladesh and the world. BIISS extends its thanks to Mr. Shoieb for
his contribution to this important discourse.
