Overview
The overview proposes an action agenda aligned to Bangladesh’s diversification goals. In the near term, prioritize trade facilitation—risk-based customs, Authorized Economic Operator schemes, paperless processes—and mutual recognition of conformity assessment for a shortlist of export lines (pharmaceuticals, processed food, light engineering). Strengthen maritime and aviation connectivity by improving port turnarounds, feeder links and air cargo capacity, while building cold-chain logistics for agro-exports. Medium-term steps include supplier-upgrading programs tied to ASEAN buyers, co-branded tourism circuits across the Bay of Bengal, and joint degree/research initiatives that cultivate talent pipelines. Security cooperation should focus on white shipping information sharing, joint SAR exercises and protocols against IUU fishing and trafficking. Progress needs a governance spine: an inter-ministerial dashboard tracking clearance times, logistics cost indices, and investment aftercare outcomes. By sequencing reforms and protecting standards, Bangladesh can embed itself in Southeast Asian value chains without compromising autonomy.

Abstract

This volume surveys the expanding interface between Bangladesh and Southeast Asia at a time when ASEAN-centered production networks, maritime routes and standards are reshaping regional development. It dissects trade patterns, investment flows and labor mobility, showing where complementarities exist and where frictions—rules of origin, non-tariff measures, logistics bottlenecks—hold back potential. Connectivity chapters examine the Bay of Bengal’s shipping lanes, port strategies, and prospective corridors that could link Bangladesh more tightly to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam. The book also explores cooperation in fisheries, disaster management, tourism and education, and the role of minilateral platforms (BIMSTEC, IORA, ASEAN-led forums) in de-risking and deepening ties. Security chapters address maritime domain awareness, transnational crime and humanitarian assistance/disaster relief, arguing for practical, professional collaboration. Throughout, the text combines data with case vignettes from firms and institutions that have navigated standards, certification and aftercare. The message is pragmatic: thoughtful policy and quality infrastructure can convert adjacency into shared prosperity.
