The Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organized a Roundtable on “Maritime Security in the Bay of Bengal: Emerging Threats and Strategies of Bangladesh” on 20 November 2024. The event was attended by Admiral M Nazmul Hassan, Chief of Naval Staff, as Chief Guest, with Ambassador AFM Gousal Azam Sarker, Chairman of BIISS, chairing the session. Key presentations were delivered by Moutusi Islam on emerging maritime security threats, Professor Dr. Rashed Uz Zaman on geopolitical implications, and Rear Admiral Mohammad Musa on policy strategies. The session included an open discussion with maritime security experts. Admiral Nazmul Hassan highlighted the importance of maintaining maritime security for Bangladesh’s economic well-being and safety of the Bay’s littorals, stressing active engagement in multiple platforms for safeguarding the region.

Moutusi Islam, Research Fellow of BIISS, was the Keynote Speaker and delivered a presentation on “Emerging Maritime Security Threats in the Bay of Bengal: Unfolding the Multi-Level Strategies.”
Thereafter, two distinguished panelists, Professor Dr. Rashed Uz Zaman, Department of International Relations, University of Dhaka, and Rear Admiral Mohammad Musa, OSP, NPP, reds, afwc, psc, PhD, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Personal), Chairman of the Bangladesh Institute of Maritime Research and Development (BIMRAD), presented respectively on “Maritime Security in the Bay of Bengal: Geopolitical and Strategic Implications” and “Emerging Maritime Security in the Bay of Bengal: Policy Options and Strategies of Bangladesh.” Afterward, an open discussion session was held and participated by relevant experts on maritime security. The resource persons had their valuable opinions, comments, suggestions, and observations during the open discussion session. Finally, the Chief Guest of the Roundtable discussion, Admiral M Nazmul Hassan, OSP, NPP, ndc, ncc, psc, Chief of Naval Staff, Bangladesh Navy, delivered his valuable speech and emphasized that economic well-being of Bangladesh and the safety of the littorals of the Bay of Bengal both depend on the maintenance of maritime security in the Bay. In this regard, he reiterated the significance of Bangladesh’s active participation at multiple platforms in securing the Bay.
