Overview
The overview identifies strategies. First, maintain diplomatic engagement with Myanmar while mobilizing pressure through ASEAN, OIC, and the UN. Second, strengthen documentation and evidence collection to support accountability for atrocities. Third, enhance services in camps to maintain dignity and reduce desperation. Fourth, support host communities with development aid to ease social tensions. Fifth, prepare contingency plans for protracted displacement, including education and skills training for refugees. The overview stresses that while repatriation remains the goal, realistic strategies must balance humanitarian needs with long-term planning.

Abstract

This interactive session revisited the prospects and challenges of Rohingya repatriation. Officials, diplomats, and researchers discussed bilateral agreements, international pressure, and the role of humanitarian agencies. Presentations highlighted Rohingya refugees’ concerns about safety, citizenship, and livelihood in Myanmar. The discussion acknowledged the diplomatic stalemate and limited progress in repatriation despite repeated attempts. It also addressed the burden on Bangladesh’s host communities and the sustainability of prolonged displacement. The session concluded that repatriation must be safe, voluntary, and dignified, requiring stronger international accountability mechanisms.
