Overview
The overview proposes actions. First, invest in innovation and product diversification to reduce dependence on basic garments. Second, strengthen labor rights by enforcing minimum wages, occupational safety, and freedom of association. Third, incentivize compliance through preferential trade schemes and reputational benefits. Fourth, engage buyers in long-term partnerships rather than transactional relationships. Fifth, promote social dialogue among government, employers, and unions to manage crises collaboratively. The overview stresses that economic resilience and decent work must go hand in hand for sustainable growth in the apparel industry.

Abstract

This session addressed the impact of the global economic slowdown on Bangladesh’s apparel industry and the implications for decent work. Participants discussed declining orders, price pressures, and compliance challenges. Workers’ rights, wages, and occupational safety were central to the debate. The seminar also examined buyers’ shifting strategies, including nearshoring and diversification, and their effects on Bangladesh. Experts argued that resilience depends on moving up the value chain, diversifying markets, and ensuring labor rights. The discussion concluded that sustainability in the apparel sector is both an economic and ethical imperative.
