Overview
The overview outlines pathways. First, negotiate preferential trade agreements with emerging economies and regional blocs. Second, strengthen export diversification into ICT, agro-products, and services. Third, build resilience in supply chains through infrastructure, logistics, and digitalization. Fourth, invest in skills development to support competitiveness. Fifth, maintain balanced diplomacy to navigate great power rivalries without compromising autonomy. The overview concludes that strategic autonomy is not isolation but adaptive engagement, ensuring Bangladesh can protect its interests while remaining integrated in the global economy.

Abstract

This roundtable explored the concept of strategic autonomy for Bangladesh in the context of shifting global trade. Participants discussed vulnerabilities arising from reliance on a few key partners and the need to diversify markets. The debate considered alternative arrangements, including South-South cooperation, regional blocs, and participation in new multilateral frameworks. Experts highlighted risks of protectionism, supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical rivalries. The discussion concluded that strategic autonomy requires both diversification and domestic capacity building, aligning trade policy with national interests.
